Ostomy and Me | How Bamboo Underwear Changed My Life

Tears were rolling down my face as the surf pounded the shore. I wondered “How will I deal with having an ostomy?  How will I stand on stage performing a gig? How will I teach yoga to a class of people looking at me? Will I ever have a relationship again? How will I find anything to wear?”

Ostomy Underwear? Bamboo to the Rescue

Woman turning toward the ocean with blonde hair facing the horizon

It is late Spring, 2005 and I am walking by the ocean with my mum. It’s a month after unexpected ostomy surgery due to Crohn’s disease. I am 35 years old and having an ostomy was not part of any plan, it was devastating.

My ostomy pouch felt so cumbersome on my tiny body as I had lost so much weight.  The top of it was hanging out over my pants and my underwear only came halfway up the pouch.  I literally had my hands holding the pouch in place.  I felt so self-conscious and I was afraid the whole pouching system would pull off. I’m not sure anyone would have come to my rescue, well except my mum!

Tears were rolling down my face as the surf pounded the shore. I wondered “How will I deal with having an ostomy?  How will I stand on stage performing a gig? How will I teach yoga to a class of people looking at me? Will I ever have a relationship again? How will I find anything to wear?”

Confidence Booster

If Theya Healthcare bamboo support briefs were available then it would have saved me a lot of time and wardrobe frustration. I would have built my self-confidence around having an ostomy faster.

Albeit, I’ve made things work over the past 15 years and I purposefully wear snug clothes just to hold my ostomy in place. But it hasn’t been an easy journey to find appropriate clothes. I’m always double checking to make sure my ostomy pouch isn’t popping out especially in yoga!

Who knew a pair of undies could make such a difference?

With the discovery of Theya Healthcare Ostomy Briefs, I feel like I can now confidently wear any clothing and my options have been transformed!

Comfort and Style

I was astonished at just how comfortable they are. They come up high enough to cover the top of my ostomy pouch but they still look attractive considering they are a higher waist brief. Plus, they have a lovely petal design across the top band.

I literally forget that I have an ostomy because the bamboo support brief holds it so well in place. I know some other ostomy underwear companies have an inner pocket but I don’t feel like it is needed with the Theya Healthcare one.

Sporty and Supportive

As a yoga teacher and a sporty spice type, I am blown away by how supportive both the bras and underpants are. What a difference they make when I’m practicing and teaching yoga. Usually, I’m always adjusting my clothes in yoga to make sure I’m not flashing my pouch. Instantly with these, I knew I had nothing to worry about, and for the first time in 15 years, I wasn’t constantly adjusting myself between poses!

The Bamboo material is great for sweat and odours. It has been a really humid summer where I live.  When I’m playing tennis I sweat a lot, but the bra and briefs absorb the sweat really well, and honestly, I don’t stink! Many of us ostomates are concerned about odor and cleanliness. This high-quality bamboo material is also highly antimicrobial and helps eliminate odors. It even has a cooling quality. These are huge bonuses for any ostomates.

What are you waiting for?

So whether you are a seasoned ostomate or new with your ostomy, you don’t need a whole new wardrobe, you just need some great new bamboo Theya Healthcare underwear.
